Rats

Rats and mice can be described as “commensal” rodents (commensal literally means “sharing one’s table”). This is a very apt description because wherever man has buildings and food there is potential for infestation.

In Britain there are two species of rat. The most widespread and abundant of these is the “Common Rat” (also known as the Norway rat or sewer rat) Rattus norvegicus, it lives anywhere offering food and shelter including sewers. The less common “Ship Rat” (or black or roof rat) Rattus rattus lives largely indoors, is rare and found in only isolated locations in the U.K.

Rats are excellent climbers, jumpers, swimmers and can easily squeeze through very small openings. The three most important needs for a rat are: A free source of water for drinking (they can only live a few days without it!), food and harbourage

    Gnawing

The word rodent comes from a Latin word that means to gnaw. Rodents gnaw with their paired incisor teeth. Rodents need to continually gnaw on solid objects to prevent their teeth from over growing. Rodent damage to buildings can prove extremely costly. Rodents gnawing on cables or wires can start fires in buildings.

    Rat Colonies

Common rat colonies typically develop from a pair or single pregnant female. Infestations can develop very quickly from a single pair. Optimum conditions are equable temperature, surplus food with adequate water and undisturbed cover for rearing young.

Rats are sexually mature at 3-4 months old; they give birth every 24-28 days with an average litter size of 6-11 young and can produce 4-6 litters a year.

Call Vermatech today to arrange an appointment for our standard domestic 3 visit rat treatment (N.B. due to the nature and complexity of rodent control the number of additional site visits may be more than 3 but these will be agreed by the customer and are chargeable). We will provide advice and recommendations, if any, regarding proofing or environmental issues prevention is better than cure.

All works carried out will be undertaken by fully qualified, professional technicians trained to RSPH level 2 or equivalent. We adhere and comply to Wildlife Aware, CRRU’s Code of Best Practice to protect the environment and non-target species that live in it.

Eliminating established rodent infestations takes time and treatments are often the beginning of a complex process to eliminating the causes of infestation.

    What Our Clients Say

    Mr C, Reading

Very professional company from first contact, a pleasure to deal with either by phone, email or in person. Wez, our technician knows his job well, is a very polite young man, gave good sound advice (I Google everything) and listened to our concerns. Always turned up at appointments on time and looking smart. I used another national pest control agency previously for the same job but didn't get the results or the attention to detail Vermatech and Wes gave. Highly recommended.
